Blueberry Basil Smoothie

Fresh basil leaves are added to a classic blueberry smoothie, creating a refreshing twist in this healthy breakfast smoothie.

I grew up on an island in the pacific northwest, on the coast of British Columbia, Canada. Taking a ferry to the mainland (where I live now Рin the city of Vancouver), through an archipelago of mountainous, treed islands was a regular occurrence Рsometimes you could even spot whales!

The ferry¬†passes through a grouping of islands called the Gulf Islands, and one of those islands is Salt Spring. Salt Spring Island is very small¬†in comparison to the island I grew up on, with a tiny town, rolling hills of farmland, artisans, hippies, rocky beaches, and a very, very laid back lifestyle. (It’s a lovely place to vacation! You should go!)

Salt Spring Island has an incredible,¬†incredible farmer’s market¬†during the spring and summer – one of my favourite vendors is Salt Spring Kitchen, who sell artisanal preserves.

Last summer I picked up their Blueberry Basil Jam which has become a¬†favourite to pair with a sharp cheddar cheese and cracker. The sweetness of the berries plays off a hint of refreshing basil – it’s a lovely sweet-savoury combination.

This pairing inspired me to re-create the same flavours in a Blueberry Basil Smoothie! I’ve added fresh basil leaves to a classic blueberry smoothie, creating a refreshing twist in this healthy breakfast smoothie.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie Bowl

This Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie Bowl tastes like a treat, but is so healthy! Frozen bananas are mixed with a little almond milk, peanut butter, cocoa powder, dates for sweetness, and chia seeds for thickness.

I’ve been obsessed with breakfast bowls lately! They are such a simple way to combine so many flavours into one delicious bowl – and then you have the best excuse to load up on all your favourite toppings. I’ve been eating tons of oatmeal bowls and rice pudding bowls¬† sprinkled with my favourite fresh fruits, crunchy granola, chopped nuts, drizzles of homemade jam… the toppings are the best part, really ūüėČ

But for this recipe, the toppings definitely come second. This Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie Bowl tastes like DESSERT in a bowl. The first time I made this recipe and dunked a spoon in my blender to give it a taste, I actually¬†audibly breathed, “OHMYGOD” and forced a spoonful into J’s mouth so he could taste it too.

Cinnamon Bun Smoothie

With the flavours of cinnamon and vanilla and the heartiness of oats and bananas, this smoothie really does taste like a cinnamon bun!

When I was little, my parents would take my brother and I on weekend outings to the local airport to watch the planes. It was a classic small town airport – back then, the airport didn’t have many big planes, but it had¬†small and charter planes, and everyone in¬†the airport was friendly and knew everyone else. There was also an airport cafe.

The cafe was in the flight school building, right on the runway beside the control tower, and probably hadn’t changed since it was built in the 50s. The cafe was nothing remarkable, with white walls and basic tables and chairs, but it had big windows that gave the best view of the runway. They also served amazing sticky cinnamon buns.

Everyday Green Smoothie

I drink this green smoothie every day!

It’s hard to eat your greens in the winter! I love eating salads in the spring and summer, but as soon as winter hits, I am all about the warm cozy food and seriously shun my greens.

But¬†no shunning greens any longer! As soon as I was gifted a Vitamix blender as a wedding present, I became a convert on the green smoothie train. Previously I’d owned a $19.99 blender, which couldn’t puree anything, even soft spinach leaves. Not that you need a Vitamix to make a smoothie – a regular old blender will do – maybe just don’t buy the cheapest blender in the store. ūüėČ

(If you’re on the edge about buying a Vitamix – DO IT. All of your smoothest smoothie dreams will come true. I was on the fence about buying one for YEARS because they’re so expensive, and the first time I used it to make homemade peanut butter in 1 minute flat, I was SOLD. And then the first time I obliterated ice cubes into a frozen margarita, I was SOLD AGAIN. That thing is POWERFUL.)

Cinnamon Pear Overnight Oats

Pears go underrated during a season that's so focused on apples. Their creaminess and crrunch pair with a generous sprinkle of cinnamon alongside healthy oats and chia seeds.

There’s no mistaking that Fall has arrived here on the Pacific Northwest. I went for my first morning run since we’ve been back from our honeymoon and I had to dig out my long-sleeve running shirt and my warm headband. There was a bite in the air, and a few crinkled leaves crunched under my feet. People who were walking their dogs were wearing scarves and jackets.

The one thing I love about Fall is that it’s a time of renewal. While I love the spontaneity of summer, I appreciate the feeling of a fresh start, the routines of back to school, the excitement of the impending holidays, and the darkening nights with nothing to do except get cozy¬†by the fireplace with a glass of red wine.
