It’s hard to eat your greens in the winter! I love eating salads in the spring and summer, but as soon as winter hits, I am all about the warm cozy food and seriously shun my greens.
But no shunning greens any longer! As soon as I was gifted a Vitamix blender as a wedding present, I became a convert on the green smoothie train. Previously I’d owned a $19.99 blender, which couldn’t puree anything, even soft spinach leaves. Not that you need a Vitamix to make a smoothie – a regular old blender will do – maybe just don’t buy the cheapest blender in the store. 😉
(If you’re on the edge about buying a Vitamix – DO IT. All of your smoothest smoothie dreams will come true. I was on the fence about buying one for YEARS because they’re so expensive, and the first time I used it to make homemade peanut butter in 1 minute flat, I was SOLD. And then the first time I obliterated ice cubes into a frozen margarita, I was SOLD AGAIN. That thing is POWERFUL.)
This smoothie recipe is my go-to every day green smoothie. It’s simple, healthy, and delicious. And by healthy, I mean that it’s not completely loaded with fruit (because no one should really be eating 7 pieces of fruit for breakfast!)
The simple ingredients in this green breakfast smoothie are: one handful of spinach, half a banana, one orange, unsweetened almond milk, vanilla, and flax seeds. I often use only half an orange and add a handful of frozen blueberries – but then your smoothie turns a lovely grey/brown shade, and it’s really not photogenic!!
For more sweetness, use sweetened almond milk, or add one pitted medjool date.
This green smoothie provides your daily intake of greens, lots of dietary fiber, a little bit of protein from the almond milk, and it’s all dairy-free. It’s a great way to fuel your day!
- handful spinach, washed and dried (approx 1/2 cup)
- half a banana
- 1 orange, peeled and cubed
- 1 cup almond/cashew/other milk (alternatively, use 1/2 cup yogurt and 1/2 cup milk/water)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon flax seeds
- 1 pitted medjool date, for sweetness (optional)
-
Add all ingredients into a blender and process at high-speed. Pour into a glass and drink!

December 22, 2016 at 3:53 pmYum! The kids and i have been making smoothies a lot lately. It’s a great way to sneak in some extra veg/fruit. They love mango, pinapple, spinach, banana smoothies. What is A’s fav combo?
